VIGO COUNTY, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) — Court officials granted another delay Thursday in the trial of Shane Meehan, the man charged with murder in the shooting death of Terre Haute Police Department Det. Greg Ferency in July, moving the deadline to file charges back to December.
A joint motion to delay the trial another 60 days was filed Thursday morning by both government prosecutors and Meehan’s defense attorneys, according to public documents. Originally, the last day for prosecutors to file charges against Meehan was set for Aug. 6, but a motion to delay the deadline 60 days was granted on July 22, moving the date to Oct. 5.
Following the granting of Thursday’s joint motion to delay by the court, the deadline to file indictments against Meehan has now been moved to Dec. 4. In the motion, attorneys on both sides cited little time to prepare as well as the “sensitive and complex” nature of the case and charges being brought against Meehan.
Meehan, 44, is facing a charge of premeditated murder of a federal agent after allegedly shooting Ferency on July 7 outside of the FBI Indianapolis Resident Agency in Terre Haute. If convicted, Meehan could face up to life in prison, the FBI said in a release.
