TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) — CANDLES Holocaust Museum has surpassed its goal of raising $25,000 from donors. Currently it has received $25,150.78. It will continue to accept donations through Dec. 31.
Several events are scheduled through October. Visitor Appreciation Day will be Saturday, Oct. 10; people can tour the museum for free between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m.
A reunion for those who have taken the museum’s trip to Auschwitz will be Saturday, Oct. 18, at 4 p.m. Those who have gone on the trip in the past will reflect on their experiences and ZLOTY, a variation of the game BINGO, will be played. Registration deadline for this event is Oct. 7. Those who register by that date will receive ZLOTY cards and CANDLES candies; those who register afterwards will have to print out their own cards.
On Saturday, Oct. 24 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., visitors will be encouraged to participate in the Daffodil Project, planting flowers in the museum’s memorial garden. Plants and tools will be provided.
CANDLES Holocaust Museum was founded by Eva Kor, an Auschwitz survivor who as a child had been subjected to cruel experiments conducted Dr. Josef Mengele. She preached about forgiveness and human rights and was known for her bracing sense of humor. She died last year while leading CANDLES’ annual trip to Auschwitz.
