VERMILLION COUNTY, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) — Could the old Ernie Pyle Elementary School building serve as a childcare center?
That’s the question that a new survey aims to answer as officials with the Vermillion County Redevelopment Commission look into the feasibility of using the building as such. The school was shut down at the end of the 2023 school year.
“The opportunity to revitalize the well-known Ernie Pyle Elementary School feels like the perfect fit for Vermillion County,” Vermillion County Redevelopment Commission President John Moore said. “We encourage all residents to participate in this survey to help us best understand the need for access to high-quality child care within the community.”
The commission hopes the survey will help shed light on the community’s childcare needs, and the current state of available childcare, and determine what kinds of programs and services would best serve Vermillion County and its surrounding areas.
Currently, the Redevelopment Commission and their local stakeholders are aware that Vermillion County lacks high-quality child care and that child care capacities cannot meet the demand for care within Vermillion County.

The commission said they will continually assure that the community’s needs are kept at the forefront during the feasibility study process and throughout future decision-making.
“On behalf of the entire Vermillion County Redevelopment Commission, we are confident in achieving these goals, and we are eager to receive community insight and prospective first and foremost to do so,” Moore said.
