TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) — There’s a great need for after-school programming in Indiana.
That’s according to a representative from the Indiana Afterschool Network who visited Terre Haute on Friday.
Derrick Carnes was invited by Eleanor Ramseier with Camp Navigate to speak with community members who are involved with expanded learning opportunities outside of the school day.
That can include programs like before-school or after-school programs as well as summer camps.
He wanted to let people know about the resources available to help these programs and their staff members.
Carnes says data from the national organization, Afterschool Alliance, found that for every Hoosier child in an afterschool program, three more are waiting to get in.
“A lot of times, something as simple as just geography is a boundary for kids, that live in more rural parts of the state, that lack transportation, to the programs that are closest to them. Other times programs have fees associated with them, and so we’re working to increase access to all kinds of programs for every kid in Indiana,” said Carnes.
Carnes says these programs can lead to better grades, better attendance, and a higher interest in learning. It can also help children explore interests they may want to pursue.
