TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) — Thanks to this year’s Polar Plunge, people can be freezing for a reason.
Indiana State University is hosting this year’s non-profit event, Polar Plunge, on Saturday, Feb. 25 from 10:30 a.m. – 11:30 a.m. Those who participate submerge themselves in cold water by jumping into bodies of water during the winter season.
Some participants choose to prepare for the event by dressing warmly, while others take a more stylistic approach to the event.
“We’ll actually have a costume contest that goes along with the event, but they’ll be all dressed up and having fun. It makes a quick dip for them and they’re out and running to the locker room to dry off,” explained John Lentz, Chair of Polar Plunge at ISU.
All of the donated funds go to Special Olympics Indiana, with the upcoming Summer Games taking place on ISU’s campus.
“It supports the costs affiliated with the games, transportation here, food, the overnight accommodations, and so on. So, the hope is that these athletes don’t have to pay for anything out of their own pocket” Lentz said.
The plunge takes place at noon at the ISU Student Rec Center, and according to the Polar Plunge website, any registered participant, or “plunger,” must raise a minimum of $85 to take the plunge. WTWO’s Nicole Kresean will be emceeing the event.
