SULLIVAN COUNTY, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) — A new Sullivan County Coroner was chosen by precinct members at 10 a.m. Saturday in a caucus held by the Sullivan County Republicans at the Mark Leo Reed Youth Center.
Joe Coffman, superintendent of water and sewage for the city of Carlisle, Ind., was chosen by the caucus to be the next Sullivan County Coroner. According to Sullivan County Republicans member Cheryl Waterman, the caucus had narrowed down four applicants to choose from and Coffman received a majority of support.
The coroner’s position recently became open after former coroner Tracy Tackett was found dead on Aug. 16 inside a vehicle at County Road 300 North and 225 East. The cause of death was from a self-inflicted gunshot wound, according to authorities.
Tackett had been the subject of an Indiana State Police investigation that began Aug. 12, however there were no active arrest warrants for Tackett upon his death. ISP announced Sept. 2 that the investigation into Tackett had concluded.
