PUTNAM COUNTY, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV)– Update: Four people were taken by helicopter to an Indianapolis hospital following a crash in Putnam County involving a Department of Corrections vehicle.
According to Indiana State Police, the incident occurred near the intersection of U.S. 231 and Jackson Street at 4 p.m. on Wednesday.
Investigating troopers found that a 2024 GMC pickup truck driven by a 47-year-old Greencastle man was headed northbound when for an unknown reason he drifted into the opposing lane of traffic and struck a van owned by the IDOC head-on.

The van was driven by a 31-year-old Correctional Officer and was carrying an inmate and an additional officer at the time.
ISP Sgt. Matt Ames said that all four individuals were then flown by helicopter from the scene due to the severity of their injuries. However, the injuries are considered non-life-threatening.
The Putnam County Sheriff’s Office, Greencastle Police Department, Greencastle Fire Department, Putnam County EMS, Life Line, and Stat Flight responded to the scene.


Original: Earlier Wednesday a crash between a pick up truck and Department of Corrections vehicle injured 4 people.
The crash happened on State Road 231 in Putnam County near Greencastle. According to Sergeant Matt Ames the pick up truck was traveling north bound. The truck then crossed over the white line making contact with the Department of Corrections vehicle.
A total of 4 people were injured during the crash including a corrections officer and inmate. Their condition is unknown at this time.
