VIGO COUNTY, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) — The Ouabache Land Conservancy is teaming up with the Vigo County Public Library to offer local families a chance to interact with nature and hear a great story.
The first Storybook Hike will take place Saturday, starting at 10 a.m. at the Jackson-Schnyder Nature Preserve. The event is for ages 5 and up, and will feature a simple hike along the trail and a stop to listen to a reading of Dr. Seuss’ “The Lorax.”
Ouabache Land Conservancy VP of Development Alysa Morley said the organization recently had a lot of success last fall with their Halloween hike, and it caused the group to want to create more opportunities to get families out on the trails.
“We wanted to offer more events that are aimed toward families,” Morley said. “All of our events are generally family friendly, but last years Halloween hike was popular with kids and parents, and so we thought that was something we could expand on and have more events aimed at families.”
The hike will be led by a volunteer from the OLC, with library staff assisting for the story time.
If folks are unable to make Saturday’s hike, there is a second hike planned for April 27 at the same location. The second hike will feature two short stories that librarians said encourage readers to be curious about the outdoors.
Those two stories are “Outside In” by Deborah Underwood, and “Wonder Walkers” by Micha Archer.
Morley said she hopes the events are well attended so the group can continue to hold similar hikes in the future for area children and families.
“If you think about it, children are the next generation of conservationists, so hopefully this sparks something in them to appreciate nature,” Morley added.
Hikers are encouraged to dress for the weather and wear good walking shoes. Attendees are asked to meet at 3635 West Concannon Avenue, West Terre Haute at 10 a.m. on each date. The event is free and no registration is required.
