TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) — Update: According to Fred Hamblen, Terre Haute Fire Department Battalion Chief, the section of 8th Street and Cherry Street is now reopened as well as the parking garage after a vehicle in the garage caught fire.
Original: Drivers are asked to avoid an area of downtown Terre Haute as crews battle a vehicle fire in a parking garage.
According to Terre Haute Fire Department Battalion Chief Fred Hamblen, a vehicle caught fire on the third floor of the Indiana State University parking garage located on Cherry Street. The fire also damaged a car parked next to the initial vehicle.
As of 11:15 a.m. Hamblen said the fire was out. As crews continue to clean up the scene Cherry Street has been closed between 6th and 8th Streets. And a section of 8th Street is closed just north of Wabash Avenue.
