SHELBURN, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) – The Shelburn Community Building opened its doors Monday as a cooling station.
The cooling station opened for anyone in the area to cool off and get something cold to drink. Shelburn Town Marshal Matthew Price said the cooling station would most likely be open until the early evening hours, but he said they’d make arrangements if it needs to be open longer.
Price explained the Shelburn Police Reserve Association received a grant from WIN Energy a couple of years ago that allowed for the purchase of a generator for the building. Since then, the building has been able to operate as a cooling station in the summer and a heating station in the winter.
“It’s important to have these things in the community, not just our community but every community, both in the summertime and the winter, so that folks know that during hard times, we’re there for them and we’re going to make sure that we take care of them,” said Price.
He thanked Casey’s General Store for donating water for the cooling station. Price reminded people to stay hydrated and watch for signs of heat-related illnesses.
