VINCENNES, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) — The day before Veteran’s Day, an entire branch of the U.S. military celebrates its 248th birthday, and a group of local veterans gathered at the Indiana Military Museum for the event.
The Marine Corps League was invited to the museum to honor/recognize/celebrate a newly restored Marine Corps Ontos. The vehicle was used in the Vietnam War period and was manufactured in Indiana.
“Well, this is the 248th birthday of the United States Marine Corps. It’s a big celebration for anybody who was in the Marines and who has earned the title. We’re here today to participate in that birthday party,” Corporal Garry Hall, Marine and Indiana Military Museum Volunteer said.
A few of the local museum volunteers and Marines spoke before ceremoniously cutting a cake with a traditional Marine Officer’s sword.
Some of the members discussed the importance of the museum, the community, and being around fellow Marines and those who have served.
“It’s still a strong Corps and we’re all proud to be a part of it. So it’s a good thing, and like I said I wouldn’t trade my experience,” said Corporal J.D. Strange, Marine and Indiana Military Museum Volunteer. “For me personally, I’m just glad to be here and be alive and to be a part of this. I do volunteer at this museum. I’ve done that for several years now. I’m glad to be a part of it. But to be around fellow comrades, fellow Marines is a good thing,” Strange added.
