TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) — After nearly 3,000 athletes celebrated and competed in the 53rd Special Olympics Indiana Summer Games, the event has come to an end.
This year marks the 51st Special Olympics that Indiana State University has been the host of, displaying ISU’s dedication to the event.
“The Special Olympics Indiana Summer Games is a special time at Indiana State University. Thank you to the visiting athletes, their families, and coaches for coming to our campus here in Terre Haute. To the selfless volunteers and event staff, your work does not go unrecognized; thank you for stepping up wherever you were needed. We look forward to welcoming Special Olympics Indiana back in 2024 and for many years to come,” said the President of Indiana State University, Dr. Deborah Curtis.
This year’s Special Olympics Indiana included the participation of local law enforcement, a swim meet at Rose-Hulman, opening ceremonies at the Hulman Center, a movie night, a dance, and a firework celebration.
“I cannot stress enough just how important our community is to the success of the Special Olympics Indiana Summer Games. Our staff prides itself on creating a wonderful environment for these athletes to enjoy. The atmosphere and energy during the weekend are indescribable, and I encourage anyone who can do so to be involved. Thank you to our sponsors, volunteers, and event staff,” Nancy Rogers, ISU’s Vice President of University Engagement, said.
Both Terre Haute and Indiana State are looking forward to once again hosting the Summer Games in 2024.

We are very thankful to Indiana State University for its 50+ year commitment to our athletes and the hundreds of ISU staff members who work many hours to help put on the Summer Games. The Games were successful because of everyone working together,” said Jeff Mohler, the President and CEO of Special Olympics Indiana.
