CLAY COUNTY, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) — A Brazil man charged with the May 11 murder of William Matherly appeared in Clay County Superior Court Tuesday.
Jon Luke Benjamin McGuff, 25, of Brazil, faces a singular charge of murder, a level 1 felony, in relation to the shooting death of William Matherly.
Investigating police found Matherly dead having been shot 4 times in the chest. Witnesses would tell police McGuff had arrived to the property with Matherly’s ex and gotten into an argument just before shooting the man.
The two reportedly then spent a night in the woods before McGuff would turn himself in on the morning of May 12.
Tuesday, McGuff’s initial hearing was held in front of Judge Robert Pell, where McGuff was assigned a Public Defender in Attorney Matthew Effner. A preliminary plea of not guilty was entered on behalf of McGuff.
McGuff was ordered to be held in the Clay County Jail without bond.
McGuff will appear for a pretrial conference on July 17, at 1:30 p.m., his jury trial has been scheduled for December 18 at 1:30 p.m.
