TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV)– Over a dozen people around the area put their endurance to the test at the Vigo County YMCA Saturday– while also giving back to a good cause.
The second annual ‘Y not Tri” event allowed people to do a 300 meter swim, a mile run and a five-mile bike ride to raise money for local scholarships. Executive branch director Nicole Fry said they wanted to give people an opportunity to be active in the winter months.
“I think sometimes we can be our biggest critics. Whenever you think about the triathlon, it’s like, ‘Oh no, I could never do that,’” she said.. “We understand sometimes those goals are hard to get started, so just offering up the opportunity where people can overcome those obstacles, get out of their own way and just try something new is really an opportunity for us we wanted to provide for our participants.”
Participants also had the option to sign up in teams, and break up the triathlon among their members. Fry said the money allows families in need to take part in some of their programs.
“Because of the funds raised today, we are able to put that back into the community and allow kids to participate in all of the wonderful youth activities we have, like after-school programming, summer day camp and all of the things the YMCA has to offer,” she said.
