TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) – The Terre Haute City Council wrapped up its first meeting of the year on Thursday.
The council elected a new President and Vice President for the upcoming year. Curtis Debaun will serve as the President of the council and Tammy Boland will be the Vice President.
DeBaun spoke high praise of his fellow council members.
“They all work very hard to do good for our community,” DeBaun explained. “They work harder than what most people realize.”
There’s plenty of big decisions ahead for the city council this year. One of those is how to spend federal COVID-19 relief funds.
DeBaun mentioned that’s likely the biggest item that the council will have this year.
“Deciding how to spend that money wisely in our community will be incredibly important,” DeBaun said. “We’re being cautious and that’s how we should approach that.”
Another goal for DeBaun is continue to be transparent with the public. He said that’s something they’ve been good at in the past and will continue to do so.
“I want to continue to be a very transparent council,” DeBaun said. “I think we do a good job of that and I want to continue to make sure we do that.”
Boland shared a similar feeling saying she feels they’ve been very transparent over the years. She explained that they want to continue to maintain a good relationship with the community.
“Just continue to be present, continue to listen and continue to know what their concerns are,” Boland said.
The next Terre Haute City Council meeting is scheduled for January 12.
