TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) – Girls of Excellence Mentoring by Highland is hosting its relaunch party on June 11 at the Vigo County Public Library.
For director Tante Vaughn, the opportunity to be a positive role model to young girls is incredibly important, as it represents her opportunity to give back to the community.
“I didn’t have an outlet until I met a mentor that stepped into my life,” Vaughn said. “So I wanted to give kids in our community the same thing that somebody gave me. A mentor, an outlet, someone to talk to, somebody to be there and be a positive role model in their life, let them know, you can make it, you can do it, you are enough.”
Girls of Excellence works with girls ages 5-18. Vaughn said the plan is to meet on a weekly basis in a group setting or one-on-one, depending on each girl’s preference.
“We focus on self-esteem, making right choices and teaching them to be role models in their circle of influence,” Vaughn said.
Even though the group only meets once a week, Vaughn said she wants to be there as much as the girl’s need.
“They’ll get someone who will be a part of their life, ask them how they’re doing and text them during the week checking on them,” she said.
The group hasn’t met since 2020, in large part due to the pandemic. But now, Vaughn is thankful to be back and able to assist the younger generation, a role she believes is very important.
“Nowadays, children need support, children need an outlet. They need help and I want to be that extra help to someone.”
