HYMERA, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) — After being described as deteriorated and overdue, major road improvements are coming to a portion of Vine Street in Hymera.
The project includes building ADA-compliant sidewalks on each side of Vine, creating a new school crossing, adding a storm drain and resurfacing the road with asphalt.
The renovations will be from Vine Street to State Road 48.
“I attended this school, the sidewalks were bad then. This is something we’ve never had the funding to do until now. This is something we probably should have done 30 years ago,” Nick Cullison, Facility Manager of Hymera, said.
The total cost will be around $420,000. A grant from the Indiana Department of Transportation will pay for $320,000 of it with the remaining balance going to the city.
Kara Harris took ownership of Hytown Liquor about a month ago, but as a resident, she’s always noticed the condition of the roads.
“One big concern we had as business owners and as residents were the sidewalks. They’re not ADA complaint and in some cases that could be a tripping hazard,” She added.
A construction date is not known. However, Cullison hopes addressing the infrastructure will attract more people to live in Hymera.
“We were told once you start doing some big projects and make things look better, people will get involved. We’re seeing that and more people coming out. I don’t know how to explain it and how that domino effect happens, but we started this and more people are investing in our town now,” Cullison added.
A bidding process is expected to start in the coming weeks.
