BLOOMINGTON, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) — Police and other first responders in Bloomington will be more prepared to communicate with nonverbal individuals after a gift from the Autism Society of Indiana.
A donation of more than 200 picture communication cards was given to the police through a grant provided by the Psi Lota Xi sorority of Bloomington. The cards will be placed in all vehicles related to first responders and law enforcement officers in Monroe County.
The communication boards will give police, firefighters and EMS providers another way to communicate with a person who may be nonverbal, have autism, or be experiencing other factors that make verbal communication difficult during an emergency.
The Autism Society of Indiana is working to get national grant funding in order to provide communication cards for every law enforcement and first responder agency in the state.
