TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) – The Greater Terre Haute NAACP honored a group of area high schoolers at the Vigo County Historical Museum on Saturday.
36 students participated in the Racial Justice Essay Contest that was sponsored by the Equal Justice Initiative. Essays written covered various racial justice topics.
Some award winners could receive scholarships worth up to $5,000.
Greater Terre Haute NAACP President Sylvester Edwards said that multiple students were recognized due to how strong many of the essays were written.
“The people from Equal Justice Initiative in Alabama judged all of them and they were so good, that instead of having just first through fifth, we have a number of second place winners,” Edwards said.
