TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) – The Vigo County Public Library hosted the second edition of the Legislative Crackerbarrel on Saturday.
This event is a gathering of local legislators and community members to discuss current legislation at the statehouse.
This is an open Q&A space, but most of the concerns from community members regarded House Bill 1134.
This bill could limit how educators teach topics regarding race, politics and religion. Supporters of the bill believe it gives parents more of a voice in their child’s educations. However, its opposition claim the bill undermines the role of teachers.
Vigo County Teachers Association President Heidi McDonald said this bill could drive teachers away from the profession.
“My concern is that it will further push educators our of the profession who are currently teachers,” McDonald said. “It could increase the number of people not coming into our profession really do to a lack of respect of our profession.”
HB 1134 passed through the House and is currently making its round through the Senate.
