GREENCASTLE, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) — If you spend just a few minutes around Sgt. Heath Hayes, it’s easy to feel the passion he has for his job. For the past five years, Hayes has worked as a recruiter for the Indiana National Guard and he said he truly enjoys what he is doing.
“I am a provider of information and I provide options and opportunities,” Hayes said.
Hayes was born in Brazil, Ind. and after graduating from Greencastle High School, he went to technical
school to become a mechanic. For a time, he worked for a car dealership, but said he wanted to do more.
A friend was in the military, and so he decided to talk to a recruiter and was convinced. But he said he also had to convince his mom.
His parents backed his decision and so he began his duty with the Army, which carried on a family tradition. His grandfathers served during Vietnam and both of his great grandfathers were in the military during World War II, including one who was part of the support team for gliders used in the D-Day invasion.
For one year, Hayes was based in Iraq. He was a member of the U.S. Army’s military police effort. They trained and advised Iraqi police, and Hayes said it was challenging, but very rewarding.
“A lot of barriers, but figuring out how to overcome those obstacles was a big part of it,” Hayes said.
After his tour, Hayes was honorably discharged. Then, it was back to Indiana to his wife and eventually the arrival of two daughters.
He worked for the railroad for a time, but said he missed the military. So he decided the Indiana National Guard would be a good fit, which led to a recruiter position, back home again where it all started in Brazil.
Hayes said his enthusiasm for his job and love of country is something that he tries to convey to the
young men and women who are considering the military.
“When you believe in something, then it matters,” he said.
Recently, Hayes became a recruiter in the Avon, Ind. area and his wife Brittney also serves the community as a nurse.
