SULLIVAN, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) – The application for the open Sullivan County Coroner position will close at 12 p.m. on Sept. 1 with a caucus vote to follow on Sept. 4, Sullivan County Republicans member Cheryl Waterman said.
In order to apply, applicants must be a Sullivan County resident and a member of the Republican Party. So far, Waterman said she has received seven applications all from licensed EMTs, coroners or firefighters. All applications and letters of intent must be submitted to Waterman’s home address by noon on Sept. 1.
On Sept. 4, a caucus will be held by precinct members at Mark Leo Reed Youth Center in Sullivan, Ind. The caucus will be closed to the public and members will vote on the next coroner that day.
The coroner’s position recently became open after former coroner Tracy Tackett was found dead on Aug. 16 inside a vehicle at County Road 300 North and 225 East. The cause of death was from a self-inflicted gunshot wound, according to authorities.
Tackett had been the subject of an Indiana State Police investigation that began Aug. 12, however there were no active arrest warrants for Tackett upon his death. ISP and the Indiana Crimes Against Children Unit announced last Friday they are continuing the investigation into Tackett.
