TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) — Several families were displaced following a Sunday morning apartment fire in Terre Haute.
The Harrison Apartments received significant structure damage in the blaze that occurred around 4:30 a.m. Sunday.
“It is under investigation at this time,” Terre Haute Fire Chief Jeff Fisher told MyWabashValley.com. “The crews will be back out in the morning to take another look at it, and at this time we are considering it a suspicious fire.”
Two people were trapped in upper story apartments during the fire. They were rescued when firefighters arrived.
According to Fisher, it took crews less than an hour to contain the fire; however, crews were not able to leave until 8 a.m. Sunday morning due to an investigation into the cause.
“Sometimes those fires can get a pretty good jump on us, but crews did a good job at getting it extinguished,” Fisher said.
Fisher said American Red Cross has already stepped in to lend a helping hand to those affected by the fire.
“It was bad enough that people had to be placed in alternative housing,” Fisher said. “It’ll be probably the hotels or whatever the Red Cross, whatever hotel works with the Red Cross, but they were not able to go back to their apartment.”
Fisher said the next steps in the investigation will happen Monday morning.
“They’ll determine where it started, how it started, and then they’ll go from there,” he said.
Fisher said that no injuries of residents or firefighters were reported.
