BRAZIL, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) – You have likely heard countless stories about local humane societies and shelters being full of dogs, cats and other animals.
Scarlett, a pitbull-mix at the Clay County Humane Society is less than a year old. She, like all of the other animals, needs a forever home. However, she may need a little more love and attention than your everyday four-legged friend.
“We got a call from dispatch on November 26 that a dog was laying on the side of the road, possibly hit by a car,” Kendra Wingerter, Facility Manager at the Clay County Humane Society, said.
She has since been through multiple vet visits, even getting pins put into her femurs.
“Her pelvis and both of her femurs are broken. And they kept her there for a little over a week on pain medicine and antibiotics,” Wingerter said.
Wingerter said Scarlett would likely do best in a quieter home with someone who has the time, space, and resources to help her heal.
“She’ll probably have long-term issues. We still don’t know for sure, one of her back legs may still have to be amputated, [and] her pelvis is still healing too,” Wingerter said.
Even though she may need a little more love and attention than most dogs, she has no problem returning the favor.
“Even from the time we picked her up, she’s always been this sweet and she never really acts like she’s uncomfortable, she’s always just so sweet,” Wingerter said. “Like everybody, we’re so full. I mean if they can’t adopt her, adopt another dog you know. They all need homes.”
Wingerter said they do have a foster lined up for Scarlett, but she will still need a permanent home once she heals.
