TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) — One of Terre Haute’s favorite holiday traditions is this weekend and it’s all to help local food banks and pantries.
Miracle on 7th Street is one of the city’s biggest fundraisers, and there is still time to pitch in.
Friday morning, Miracle on 7th Street held a curbside donation drive for non-perishable and monetary donations.
“I think food insecurity is a large problem in our area and we just want to be able to help and do our part and support as much as we can for our local food pantries,” Lindsey English, Membership Engagement Manager for The Station, said.
Since 2008, this event has given out more than $245,000 and collected 29,000 pounds of food.
“Also collecting monetary donations for our food pantries and food banks because they really know what they need within their organization and to be able to have that flexible money to be able to spend what they need is really a huge help,” English said.
Saint Mary of the Woods College has hosted the “Light Your Way Christmas Parade,” a staple for Miracle on 7th Street, for the last seven years.
John Mace, Director of Conferences and Events said not only is it all for a great cause, but it’s a great experience for the students.
“As the coordinator of it, I have three students that are interns. On another level, our Criminal Justice students participate with the public safety of the parade. You’ll see them in their vests walking up and down, trying to encourage people to basically stay out of the road,” Mace said.
While enjoying the parade and fun activities, you can help make our local food banks and pantries start strong in the new year.
“The community just really comes together and we want to continue to have this be a free event and just help support those in need in our community,” English said.
The “Light Your Way” Christmas Parade is Saturday, December 2 at 6 p.m.
The Miracle on 7th Street event will be Sunday, December 3 from 10 a.m. – 4 p.m.
