BLOOMINGTON, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) — A new grant program aims to assist Indiana University School of Medicine to recruit and educate students from medically underserved areas of the state.
According to an IU news release, the $15.4 million program will include a $4M grant each year for the next four years, as well as scholarships for students who plan to practice in primary care specialties of pediatrics, family medicine, and internal medicine. The Health and Resources & Services Administration grant will assist the Indiana Primary Care Advancement in Clinical Training program.
“INPACT will enhance the IU School of Medicine curriculum by focusing on health system sciences, including social determinants of health and primary care skills that can benefit underserved communities,” said Bradley Allen, MD, PhD, senior associate dean for medical student education and the principal investigator on the INPACT team. “This grant will help us recruit more students from medically underserved parts of the state who are more likely to return to serve those communities’ health care needs as physicians.”
