SULLIVAN, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV)– An international group set up shop in Sullivan on Sunday to assist in the ongoing recovery efforts in the region.
The Tzu Chi Foundation, based in Taiwan, offered $800 and other materials to residents who made their way to Sullivan City Hall on Sunday. The organization has regional offices around the country, and had volunteers from around Indiana, Chicago and St. Louis to help those in need.
Sullivan County Commissioner John Waterman said he contacted the group– one he had worked with before during his time as an Indiana State Senator.
“I’ve been working with that organization since I was in the Indiana Senate back 27 years ago,” he said. “We’ve been through several major storms and floods and that kind of thing, so I called them in to help the people in Sullivan.”
Waterman, along with other city and county officials, welcomed the group, touting them as yet another example of the assistance they have received since the deadly storm rolled through March 31st.
“Most these people here are from Chicago, St. Louis, different parts of Indiana. It’s a worldwide group, it’s good to see a worldwide group here in Sullivan County helping people out here,” Waterman said.
Any resident affected by the storm who did not get a chance to meet with the group Sunday can contact the city to fill out an application, according to Waterman.
