WASHINGTON, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) — Thanks to Our Community Foundation, the Washington Carnegie Public Library’s Summer Youth Reading Program will receive grant funding.
The summer reading program is open to children ages two and up through teens, and is being awarded $550.
“The theme is ‘All Together Now’ and encourages opportunities for early childhood literacy, social and community engagement, discovery, and a love for lifelong learning,” said Teresa Heidenreich, MLS, Executive Director. “This year we anticipate an extremely high number of participants now that every student in Washington has a library card. We expect a minimum of 500 youth to sign up for the program.”
Library Youth Services Manager, Donita Mattingly mentioned that in previous years, the library served around 400 kids, noting each kid that attends will enjoy age-appropriate in-person programming, accomplish many hours of reading, and get a free book for completing the program.
“The Foundation is pleased to support the 2023 Summer Youth Reading Program,” said Mary Smith, Foundation Executive Director. “We believe the program helps students retain their reading skills during summer break and therefore contributes to their learning and ultimately, to their success.”
