VIGO COUNTY, Ind. (WAWV/WTWO) — Predicted snow brought slushy roads, shoveling out, and sledding fun to the Wabash Valley on Wednesday.
Road conditions have continued to improve throughout the area.
“We’re trying to keep them {the roads} as open and passable as we can but please be cautious,” Vigo County Engineer & Highway Director, Larry Robbins said. ” You know when you’re driving out there, slush can be just as bad as ice, it can be just as slick. Give yourself more room to turn, more room to stop. It does make all those things difficult,” Robbins added.
The Vigo County highway department was working full staff, 12-hour shifts to do their part of the cleanup efforts to help keep motorists safe on the roadways.
Downtown businesses were shoveling out, clearing sidewalks, to prepare for a normal, but snowy, business day.
“This is just typical January weather,” said Scout, owner of Scout’s Pizzeria. “You’ve got to clean the sidewalks. We get a lot of foot traffic down here on Wabash, so I just try to clean it up for them, so nobody slips and falls,” he said.
With school buildings being closed, several families took to the sledding hill at Deming Park in Terre Haute. Laughter and screams of excitement could be heard throughout the park.
Local Mom, Jenny Christensen said, “This was our first time getting out to Deming to sled. Our boys are finally old enough to get out there on the hill. It was a little slushy at first, but now that we have it packed down, they’re going pretty fast.”
Even though most students had E-Learning school work to do from home on this snow day, many still managed to get out and enjoy the accumulation.
“We did our E-Learning, some of it, this morning,” Christensen said. “And we’re going to have to go back and get the rest done when we go home but enjoying the time outside now, she added.”
Overall, residents who were out and about around the Wabash Valley, seemed to be enjoying themselves whether they were digging out or sledding down.
