TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV)– As millions prepare to celebrate the start of 2023, Saturday also marks one of the busiest travel days for Indiana State Police. As a result, Sgt. Matt Ames said ISP has been prepping accordingly.
“Overall we will see a lot of traffic on New Year’s Eve weekend,” he said. “A lot of times on New Year’s Eve, you’re going to have people consuming alcohol to celebrate the New Year coming in. We will have extra patrols.”
Susan Mardis had family visit from out of state. While their travel went smoothly, she said she always worries about the trip.
“Of course, you say your prayers for safety before they leave, and you say your prayers before they go home,” she said.
Ames said intoxicated driving– one of the main focuses for patrols on New Year’s Eve– is a leading cause of fatal accidents around the country.
“56% of all fatal accidents that occur are due to people who are driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs,” he said. “The most important thing is, if you’re going to go out and have a good time, make sure you make your arrangements beforehand. Make sure you have a designated driver.”
The extra patrols are funded by the National Traffic Safety Board.
