TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) – Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology is expanding the hours of their free, student-led homework help program, AskRose.
Providing help to middle and high school students in math and science subjects, the Rose-Hulman tutors are available by video, email, phone, or chat Sunday through Thursday from 5-10 p.m. Students in grades 6-12 can contact a tutor through the AskRose website, or by calling 877-ASK-ROSE (877-275-7673).
The need for extra tutoring opportunities became a focus for a lot of students and their families during the pandemic. As more people have started to rely on online learning, the need for reliable tutors has increased.
“We noticed especially when Covid started happening in 2020 we were getting a lot of people calling us in that 5 to 7 range but we were unable to answer them because we weren’t open, but now with our funding, and it being renewed, we are now able to open that extended amount of time,” said Roka Brovick, the AskRose supervisor.
Helping struggling students since 1991, the AskRose program finds tutors who have been recommended by Rose-Hulman faculty for their skills in a specific subject and who can easily work and communicate with middle and high schoolers. Having access to textbooks and online resources, there are usually around 20 tutors available for students to work with.
“We’ve definitely noticed a large increase in the number of students calling. It wasn’t so much at first but I know just earlier this week, we had 50 students just from that 5 to 70 window so it’s definitely, we’re a lot busier. Tutors are taking a lot more calls and we’re happy just to be helping more people,” Brovick said.
Having conducted over 750,000 sessions throughout the years, students’ privacy and identities are always protected. AskRose is a National Tutoring Association certified program and all its services are completely free.
