TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) — A single-vehicle crash shut down train traffic on one rail in Terre Haute for a time.
The crash occurred around 8 a.m. Wednesday morning near the intersection of E. Haythorne Avenue and N 35th Street. Vigo County Dispatch said as of 9:15 a.m. the roadway is back open, however, CSX was sending someone to check on potential damage to the railroad before continuing train traffic along that line.
As of 10:30 a.m. CSX said normal train operations have resumed on the affected railroad. Terre Haute Fire Department and officers from the Terre Haute Police Department were on scene to handle the cleanup.
Terre Haute Fire Chief Bill Berry said that the driver of the vehicle was able to get out of the car on her own before crews arrived on scene. She was taken to a nearby hospital for treatment of possible injuries.
According to Terre Haute Police, the crash was likely caused by brake failure. The driver of the vehicle told police that she was unable to remember the crash but added that she had recently had her brakes repaired on the vehicle. She informed police she regularly has to fill up the brake fluid on the vehicle and has had issues ever since.
Investigating officers noted that the tire tracks indicate the vehicle left the roadway approximately 215 feet from the tracks, before striking a political sign and a utility pole, eventually coming to a rest on the tracks.
A witness who had been traveling in the opposite direction told police they had seen the vehicle enter their lane before overcorrecting and driving off the side of the road.
