CARLISLE, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) – Friday marked an important milestone for dozens of offenders at the Wabash Valley Correctional Facility in Carlisle.
The prison held a graduation ceremony for inmates who completed several education opportunities provided by Ivy Tech.
Programs included HiSet, as well as career and technical training.
Christopher Keller was among the graduates and shared what this achievement means to him.
“Once I’m all done with this, get a job and focus on that, and once I’m able to go home, the high school diploma and building trades program will allow me to get a better paying job for me and my family,” says Keller.
Family members of the graduates were at the event to show their support, including Angela Butterfield whose son graduated Friday.
“I’m just thrilled because it’s a stepping stone for when he comes home,” says Butterfield.
Several companies that helped with the programs were also in attendance, such as Berry Global.
“I think people can change. I think everyone deserves a second chance and an opportunity to better themselves, and I’m very proud to work for a company that promotes that,” says Adam Elkins, Human Relations Generalist at Berry Global.
There were over 70 graduates at the ceremony.
