BRAZIL, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) — No arrests have been made in a Brazil shooting that put a 23-year-old man in the ICU, but police say they do have leads.
The incident happened just after 1 am Tuesday, Oct 11, at the West Central Village Apartments in the 600 block of Central Ave.
The victim, who has not been named, was taken to a Terre Haute hospital. As of Wednesday, according to Brazil PD Chief, Clint McQueen, the man was recovering from his injuries.
He also adds there is no threat to the public and this is believed to be an isolated incident.
“Detectives are currently working, investigating and talking to anyone they can to try to determine what happened,” He said.
Multiple people are involved in this incident, authorities say. The type of gun and how the victim and suspect knew each other has not been disclosed.
“We’re going to continue to investigate and get tips from the public and question people that we need to and try to determine what happened. If it becomes necessary, we’ll send reports to the Prosecutor’s Office and let them determine any charges,” Chief McQueen added.
Just a few feet away from where the shooting took place lives, Kelsea Simmons, she said waking up to that news was alarming.
“I feel like it would be safer if we had more neighborhood watches and there wouldn’t be as many shootings, drugs or things like that,” She said.
Police have been called to the apartment complex on the city’s northwest side multiple times over the last several years; those incidents include general crime, thefts and a shooting in 2019.
Simmons hopes this prompts stronger security in her neighborhood like implementing a stronger neighborhood watch patrol and more security cameras.
“Sometimes those security cameras don’t work. I want a nice neighborhood because there’s a bunch of kids that live here too,” Simmons added.
In an unrelated shooting, police are continuing to investigate an incident that happened on East Hendrix Street. In May, shots rang out after a motorist and pedestrian got into a verbal argument. The victim was taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

No arrests have been made.
“Those things are going to happen sometimes and that’s what we’re going to try and prevent as best as we can. If they occur, we’re going to do our best to determine what happened and proceed with whatever needs to be,” McQueen added.
