TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV)– When Lucy Chew told her daughter, Early Handlin, a student at Ryves Youth Center, that the school needed to raise $10,000 for maintenance needs, Handlin wanted to help.
“I told my daughter about it and she wanted to help, and her little friends wanted to help out too so we’re having a lemonade stand for them,” Chew said.
Chew, the owner of the Montessori Academy of Terre Haute, spent the last few weeks preparing for a lemonade stand fundraiser, proceeds will go towards the youth center. The stand was set up right outside the academy, on Wabash Avenue.
Handlin worked with several children to make the lemonade for customers. Chew said watching the kids work together for a good cause was heartwarming.
“My daughter and all her little friends, they’re so compassionate and they’re so caring. They know that if there are kids in need, they want to give, and this is a way that they can kind of help other people recognize that need and a way to help the community get involved,” she said.
Chew said she also hopes the event can raise awareness of the needs of the center.
“I think the most important thing for people to know is that this need exists for Ryves right now,” she said. “If they can’t make it here today, that’s totally fine, they can donate through an online platform that set up a fundraiser, and if they can’t find that by researching, they can just call Ryves Youth Center and donate directly to them.”
