TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) — Power was temporarily knocked out for a little more than 500 customers in the Terre Haute area after a two-vehicle crash.
According to Terre Haute Police, the crash occurred at approximately 9:48 a.m. at the intersection of Prairieton Road and W. Vorhees Street. The driver of a Nissan Sentra was heading south on Prairieton when they attempted to turn left onto Vorhees and struck the side of a Cadillac Deville that was driving in the opposite direction.
A witness told police the Cadillac had been speeding as they had passed the witness while going northbound just before the intersection. The collision caused the Cadillac to strike a utility pole on the eastern side of the road.
The pole was damaged and will need to be replaced, the incident also pulled the power lines off of two adjacent poles. The northbound lane of Prairieton was closed to allow Duke Energy space to make repairs and restore service. Duke Energy Government and Community Relations Manager Rick Burger says that they will be replacing the pole at a later date, opting instead to get service restored at a faster pace. By 11:20 a.m. the power had been restored according to Duke Energy’s outage map.
Prairieton Road has been re-opened to traffic.
The driver of the Cadillac was transported to Regional Hospital for non-life-threatening injuries the driver of the Nissan was uninjured. Police state that a failure to yield the right of way was the primary factor leading to the collision.
