TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) — With many schools in the area and around the nation reporting shortages in staffing, especially when it comes to qualified teachers, Indiana State University’s Bayh College of Education has partnered with 2 local school corporations to try to help.
The college announced that they would partner with Vigo County School Corporation and Southwest Parke Community Schools as part of the Indiana Commission for Higher Education’s Teacher Residency Grant Pilot Program.
“The school corporations selected are making strides to develop a pipeline of well-prepared future educators all across Indiana. Under the teacher residency model, mentor teachers will prepare resident teachers for the challenges they will face in the classroom.”

The Residency program was created in 2019, and is modeled after medical residency and apprenticeship programs. The residency lasts for an entire year and provides paid teaching experience for student educators who plan on teaching K-12. Students teach alongside an experienced mentor teacher, preparing them for the classroom after graduation.
