TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) — The West Central Indiana Area Health Education Center at Indiana State University received a $40,000 grant from the United Way.
The money is allowing the organization to provide mental health first aid training assistance to organizations.
The instructor Derrick Sanders taught people how to recognize the signs of someone struggling with mental health or substance abuse, and how to help them connect with resources.
“We all have mental health and we all need to be aware of our mental health,” Trainer and Instructor Derrick Sanders said. “Mental wellness is on a continuum and certainly the better our mental wellness is, the better and more fulfilling our life is.”
The training was constructed to provide further assistance for people who are struggling due to the pandemic.
“I think its important for we as community members to understand that they need help too and thats where this training really comes into play,” Director of West Central Indiana Area Health Education Center Jackie Mathis said.
Derrick Sanders was recognized for his instruction of the courses. He received the Partner of the Year award.
