FARMERSBURG, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) — A Farmersburg, Ind. man is facing several charges, including intoxicated driving and neglect of a dependent, after allegedly drunk driving with three children in the car on Thursday afternoon.
According to Indiana State Police Sgt. Kris Fitzgerald, at approximately 2:15 p.m. Thursday while patrolling near County Road 900 North at County Road 200 East he saw a man and three young children walking down the road attempting to flag down traffic. Fitzgerald said he stopped to check on them and the male allegedly said that his vehicle was stuck and they were walking home to Farmersburg.
Fitzgerald said he immediately put the young children in the backseat of his vehicle for warmth. Soon after, the man was identified as Donald F. Barron, 30, Farmersburg.
Barron then took a seat in the front passenger side, police said, and while trying to find Barron’s vehicle, which was nearby, Fitzgerald said he observed signs of impairment. Barron was given several field sobriety tests and he failed, police said.
ISP said Barron then submitted to a certified chemical test that showed he had a blood alcohol content of .15%. He was arrested and taken to the Sullivan County Jail where he is currently being detained, police said. He now face the following charges:
- Operating a vehicle while intoxicated with a passenger less than 18 years of age, Class 6 Felony
- Neglect of Dependent, Class 6 Felony
- Operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated (prior conviction), Class 6 Felony
- Driving While Suspended (prior), Class A Misdemeanor
The Sullivan County Department of Child Services was contacted in reference to the welfare of the three children.
