WABASH VALLEY, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) — Local health experts say positive COVID-19 cases have decreased from where they were a month ago.
The Indiana State Department of Health updated its county metrics map Wednesday. The map shows local counties are seeing improvement, with Parke, Greene and Sullivan counties moving to yellow.
Other counties, including Vigo County, remain at the more serious orange level. A drive-thru testing and vaccination site opened at the Vigo County Fairgrounds Wednesday.
The Vigo County Health Department said the health and safety of the community is their number one priority and that they are hoping to increase the vaccination numbers of the county. From Oct. 20 through Oct. 23, a drive-thru site at the Vigo County Fairgrounds will offer free COVID-19 testing and vaccinations.
The Pfizer vaccine along with the Johnson & Johnson vaccine is available at this drive-thru clinic. Pfizer booster shots are also available. The Vigo County Health Department said they have been seeing a lot of people coming to receive their Pfizer boosters.
Ashlee Stewart with the VCHD said it is important to build on the progress the community has made and not take steps backward.
“Our case count is down, which is fantastic, but it’s still pretty consistent,” Stewart said. “So, instead of having 100 cases a day, we’re down to like 20 or 40 a day. West Terre Haute does have a large population that potentially doesn’t have transportation and we’re reaching out to them to set up our mobile vaccination clinic out there.”
