VIGO COUNTY, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) — The Vigo County Veteran’s Court is searching for military veterans who can help other vets navigate the criminal justice system and is hosting informational sessions for potential volunteers.
The informational sessions will be held at noon on Tuesday, Oct. 19 and at 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 20. at the Main Vigo County Public Library. The location is at 1 Library Square in Terre Haute and meetings will be held in conference room B.
VCVTC is a problem-solving court that provides treatment and accountability for veterans facing criminal charges or that are dealing with mental health and addiction issues. The court provides treatment and mentoring as well as a network to connect veterans with others in similar situations.
“Mentors help keep the veteran on track throughout the entire process. Veteran mentees can face depression, PTSD, substance use disorders, housing problems and difficulties with overall functioning and well-being,” Judge John Roach said. “Veteran Mentors who want to help a fellow Vet are critical to the success of Veterans Treatment Court. Mentors are key to Leaving No Veteran Behind.”
Mentors are called “battle buddies” by the court, helping to navigate the system along with their assigned veteran mentee. As part of the VCVTC Mentor Team, volunteers typically spend two to three hours per week working with their assigned mentee and attending scheduled court appearances.
