TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) — Memorial Day traditions continued throughout the Wabash Valley Monday, including two ceremonies in Terre Haute.
The day began with a service at Woodlawn Cemetery followed later in the morning with a ceremony at Highland Lawn Cemetery. With the playing of Taps and a salute to the nation’s fallen soldiers, members of the community gathered to pay respect to those who paid the ultimate price for American freedom.
“A lot of people don’t recognize the fact of how they maintained their freedom is because of the people you see out here today,” local veteran Clifford Stephens said. “And I think we’re losing that concept. We need to pick it back up.”
Organizers hope more people will join them in future events.
“We still don’t have many people come out and observe it with us,” Darrel L. Knight, past state commander for the Indiana Veterans of Foreign Wars said. “But we sill do it, and we will continue to do it.”
Knight said Memorial Day holds a special meaning to him and his family as he and his wife lost their son, Kyle Childress, in Iraq in 2005.
