VINCENNES, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) — Despite the fact that he’s blind, Bryce Weiler has commentated for more than 150 athletic games, and now he is helping sports teams and companies become more accessible for people with disabilities.
Weiler made a stop in Vincennes Tuesday to speak with the local Rotary Club about his life and overcoming obstacles.
As co-founder of The Beautiful Lives Project, Weiler works with disabled individuals to help them experience programs in sports, art, cheer, dance and ballet.
Through his work, he was able create a program with the Baltimore Orioles to bring people who are disabled onto the field with players and coaches before games.
“Also, I have helped the Orioles become the first team in sports to wear Braille on their jerseys to honor people who are blind,” he said.
Weiler’s work hasn’t always been easy. He noted many people have doubted him or refused to work with him, but that never stopped him.
“I really wanted to be able to give back for all of the opportunities I had growing up–listening to games on the radio, listening to Brian Barnhart commentating for the Fighting Illini and Don Fisher for the Indiana Hoosiers, and to just help other people get the same enjoyment out of sports and try to create visual pictures in people’s minds for those who might be blind, visually impaired or those who might be driving around in their car and not able to watch the sport that I am commentating,” Weiler said.
