TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) – The man killed in a shooting near the southside Kroger in Terre Haute Wednesday afternoon has been identified as a local school protection officer.
The Vigo County Sheriff’s Office identified the man who died in the incident as 29-year-old Sean Martin of Riley.
Martin was a School Protection Officer for the Vigo County School Corporation and served at Riley Elementary School.
All school protection officers are appointed and sworn as special deputies of the Vigo County Sheriff’s Office.
In a statement, the Vigo County School Corporation said the following:
“We are saddened to hear about any act of violence in our community. Our thoughts are with all involved, including those at the sheriff’s department who continue their investigation.”
The sheriff’s office on Wednesday said the shooting was believed to have stemmed from a road rage incident.
The county sheriff said road rage incidents are reported often, but it is rare that they turn deadly.
“This is the first fatal that I know of. We get calls on them frequently. I don’t know the exact frequency. I’d say maybe weekly, just to give you a guess,” said Vigo Sheriff John Plasse.
Authorities have not yet released the name of the other person involved pending the completion of the investigation and a review by the Vigo County Prosecutor’s Office regarding possible criminal charges.
The sheriff said they are reviewing video and interviewing witnesses.
