TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) — Terre Haute City Council Members voted unanimously Wednesday evening to officially rename Blakely Avenue, from Wabash Avenue to Aikman Place, to “Detective Greg Ferency Memorial Road”.
“When something like that happens, us as elected officials, we like to do whatever we can,” Councilman Curtis DeBaun said. “And it’s a small thing, it really is. It’s the smallest thing we can do as a City Council and Officer Ferency sure deserves that and so much more.”
The road is named after the Terre Haute police officer who was killed in the line of duty in July. Ferency served the community for more than 30 years and helped train many members of the Terre Haute Police Department along with police officers from around the world.
Terre Haute City Councilman George Azar said it was an effortless vote, and he agrees that Detective Ferency and his family deserve it.
“No one knew that anything like this was going to ever happen in our community,” Azar said. “He was well-liked it seemed by his peers and I just think that it is a small way that we can honor those that give their lives for us.”
DeBaun also said he thinks this is another way for the community to come together, and a bigger way to honor others who have lost their lives.
“The community came together when he lost his life and I think there is still a lot of support in the community for him and the fallen officers we’ve had within the last 10 years or so,” DeBaun said.
