, but the singer-turned-politician is hoping to be declared the winner in a North Carolina Democratic congressional primary that election officials say is still too close to call.
As of Wednesday morning, reports Aiken was leading his Democratic rival for North Carolina’s 2nd congressional district by fewer than 400 votes with more than 99 percent of the ballots counted.
Aiken and his rival, former North Carolina Commerce Secretary Keith Crisco , both have about 40 percent of the vote. Another candidate was a distant third.
Last week, Aiken got an endorsement Ruben Studdard , the singer who beat him on the 2003 edition of American Idol . Studdard tweeted he was “proud of my friend” and “we need more people like him in Congress.”
The Democratic primary winner will face incumbent Republican Representative Renee Ellmers in November.
