The Terre Haute City Council held its sunshine meeting last night.
The major issue discussed was the proposed graffiti ordinance.
The proposal would require property owners to remove graffiti within 30 days of receiving notice from the city or face a $25 fine.
The city could also clean up the mess for you if you don’t. Those against the idea question how the city can fine a victim of crime and make them clean up the mess committed by a criminal.
The other question is if the city steps in to clean up graffiti, how is it done so as not to cause possible damage to private property and who will pay the tab which could run over $1,000.
The measure will likely get tabled at next week’s regular meeting.
The council also discussed appropriating between $10,000 and $15,000 to hire a financial consultant to aid them in figuring out the city budget.
The main question is does the council need the consultant and where will the money come from during tight budget times.
The council is expected to vote on the consultant question next week.
