At approximately 10:30 Wednesday night, Indiana State Police and Putnam County emergency agencies responded to a two-vehicle crash at 1420 East State Road 42 near Cloverdale. One driver was airlifted with suspected life threatening injuries.
Preliminary investigation revealed 50-year-old Mark Patterson of Cloverdale was attempting to back a 2014 Freightliner semi tractor into his driveway from SR 42, when he was suddenly struck in the side by a 2004 Ford SUV driven by 69-year-old Jack Rhoden of Cloverdale. Rhoden was extricated from the vehicle by Cloverdale Fire Rescue, stabilized by Putnam County Operation Life EMS, and then airlifted to Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis. Rhoden was not wearing a seatbelt and appeared to have suffered multiple fractures and lacerations. His injuries appeared to be life threatening. Patterson was slightly injured and treated at the scene.
State Road 42 was closed for approximately one and one-half hours for crash investigation and clean-up. Drugs and/or alcohol do not appear to be a factor in the crash.
