The IRS is warning of a nationwide scam that aims to take your money and maybe your identity.
Scam artists call you on the phone to tell you they are from the IRS, you owe money and you need to pay now.
One of the first tips that it is a hoax is that the person calling wants you to pay the fee through a wire transfer or by pre-paid credit card.
The crooks are getting better and they will use equipment to make your caller ID look like it is the IRS on the other end.
Don’t be fooled – the caller ID even says they are the IRS.
If you don’t get a phone call you might receive an email.
Don’t fall for that either and don’t click on any links.
The IRS says that they usually contact you by mail in writing and they may want you to pay up if you owe but they won’t ask for it on a green dot credit card.
