What We Want to See in a Black Widow Movie

By Molly Freeman, Hollywood Staff

Fans of the Marvel Universe have been pushing for a solo Natasha Romanoff/Black Widow film since 2012's The Avengers. Now that Kevin Feige has announced Marvel is in fact developing a movie all about Black Widow with Scarlett Johansson, it's time to get our speculation caps on! So what do the fans want to see in Marvel's upcoming super heroine film?

So far, Black Widow has appeared in just as many films as the other superheroes in Marvel's franchise: Iron Man 2, The Avengers, Captain America: The Winter Solider, andThe Avengers: Age of Ultron. But she's been mostly a mystery.

In Iron Man 2 and The Avengers, we saw brief glimpses into her past - there was a fleeting dive into her childhood and history when Black Widow was talking to Loki. Feige also revealed that Black Widow will have an important character arc over the course of The Winter Soldier and Age of Ultron.

Feige told Variety that Black Widow's part in Age of Ultron will be substantial and viewers will "learn more about her past and learn more about where she came from and how she became in that film."

While we're excited to get a more detailed look into Natasha Romanoff's past - who she is, where she came from, and how she became the superheroine we know today - we're wondering what that will leave for a Black Widow movie.

A solo film for Black Widow can't be an origin story - unless it was set entirely in the past, which we don't recommend (and highly doubt) - like Iron Man, Thor, or Captain America: The First Avenger. So we'd like to see her strike out on her own and distance herself a little bit from the rest of the superheroes in the universe.

If we were to see any cameos or appearances from the other Avengers, we would only like to see Clint Barton/Hawkeye (Jeremy Renner). Given their close friendship in The Avengers - and the fan-favorite line "You and I remember Budapest very differently" - we'd like to see their relationship developed a little bit more. But not a romantic relationship. That's one thing we don't want to see.

And yes, we'd like to know what happened in Budapest. (Wouldn't it be awesome if they used flashbacks and unreliable narrators like in True Detective? Okay, okay, now I'm dreaming.)
